More than fifteen years ago, veteran psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Malcolm McLeod originated a striking new theory on the cause of "atypical depression" and a new way to deal with it. Atypical depression is a type of depression that affects 30 million Americans. Characterized by chronic depression with one or more symptoms, including excessive hunger (especially for carbohydrates and sugary foods) and/or weight gain, lethargy, sleepiness, and hypersensitivity to rejection, it is extremely resistant to treatment. People with atypical depression typically don't respond to common antidepressants. Moreover, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), which have been used as a treatment, have such dangerous side effects that they are rarely prescribed.
Dr. McLeod discovered that atypical depression is triggered by insulin resistance, a condition in which the body does not respond to insulin efficiently, and that supplemental chromium, a a trace mineral needed by the body to help insulin work had suffered from depression for as long as twenty to thirty years. However, his discovery was received with skepticism. Yet, amazed by the dramatic improvements chromium had on his depressed patients, along with other beneficial health effects such as a decrease in appetite and an increase in energy, Dr. McLeod had no choice but to believe he was on to something.
Piecing together clues culled from conservations and insights during therapy sessions, as well as from his own studies and investigative research, Dr. McLeod eventually established a scientific and medical explanation for chromium's powerful, therapeutic effects. In a nutshell: By improving the body's sensitivity to insulin, chromium helps increase brain chemicals that regulate mood, emotions, sleep, and appetite, and thereby exerts its powerful antidepressant effects.
In the last three years, Dr. McLeod has witnessed double-blind studies at major medical universities that confirm his pioneering findings. He say the medical and scientific worlds begin to accept its revolutionary implications for the treatment of depression. In this eye-opening book, Dr. McLeod combines personal/patient narratives and medical expertise with a fascinating exposition of his discovery, and a five-step program for making use of it to lift - and free one's self - from depression.
