The name “tea tree” refers to the practice of drinking an infusion of the leaves as a healing herbal drink, first observed by the sailors on Captain Cook’s ship in the eighteenth century. Production of the oil is now a huge commercial enterprise with a whole host of tea tree products available on the market, from toothpaste to foot powder. It is one of the most antiseptic plants ever discovered.
