These contain microscopic sacs of essential oil, so that when you rub the leaf, the aroma is very strong on your fingers. Patchouli leaves are used to protect cloth from moths in India, and the oil is regarded as an insect repellent. It is also traditionally used in India as a skin conditioner and antiseptic.
