What makes Kosmea’s  Organic Rose Hip Oil, Certified 100% so unique?
Kosmea Organic Rose Hip Oil is a unique skin care ingredient and at Kosmea we make a very unique rose hip oil.  We source our rose hips from a certified organic source (ECOCERT) from a region where rainfall is high and therefore the rose hips are plumper, richer and jucier.   Kosmea uses both the fruit skin and seed of the rose hip, giving our rose hip oil a high content of the antioxident, lycopene.   Kosmea uses the super-critical extraction process which is heat-free and solvent-free so our rose hip oil stays just as nature intended.  Kosmea will not bleach, colour or deodorise our rose hip oil to make it more commercially attractive as this would deplete the natural goodness of the oil.

Kosmea is a South Australian company founded on the unique properties of organic rose hip oil. Kosmea offers a complete range of natural skin care products for the face, hair and body.

Kosmea is formulated with organic rose hip oil and the finest herbal, plant and flower extracts.

Is your skin care safe?

At Kosmea, we believe that, in the same way that we take care of our bodies with a healthy diet and exercise, so we should ensure that the products we put on our skin are as ‘healthy’ as they can be. Why use artificial colours and fragrances when we have the entire natural flower and plant world on our doorstep!  Kosmea Skin Care-Non Toxic Skin Care.

As a living, breathing organ our skin has the ability to absorb products and their ingredients and in order to avoid allergic reactions, chronic dry skin conditions, premature ageing and more, we recommend you avoid:

WHICH INGREDIENT?

WHY IS IT USED?

WHY NOT?

WHAT WE USE INSTEAD

Synthetic paraben preservatives

Frequently used as preservatives in products and includes ingredients such as butyl paraben, ethyl paraben, isobutyl paraben, methyl paraben and propyl paraben.

These ingredients are very effective in preserving the product, are low cost and don’t effect the product negatively.

Although inconclusive, studies have shown that parabens can be absorbed into the bloodstream and have been found in cancerous tumours particularly breast tissue (P. Darbre, 2004). Parabens are also noted as suspected allergens and as a cause of allergic dermatitis. (K Farrow, Skin Deep, 2002)

We use natural preservatives like grapefruit seed extract wherever possible to preserve the product and ensure its safety. In order to ensure a substantial shelf life we do use other non-natural preservatives such as phenoxyethanol and sodium benzoate with a proven safety track record. We typically use the lowest possible percentage of the mildest preservatives in order to ensure safety and protect the longevity of the product.

Artificial fragrances and parfum To fragrance a skin care product and make it more commercially attractive.  Artificial fragrances are made with a lot of synthetic chemicals and can irritate extremely sensitive skin and cause skin irritations. We use essential oils such as rosewood, ylang ylang and rose geranium oil and flower waters such as orange flower water (Moisturising Lotion SPF 30+) and rose flower water (Hydrating Rosewater Mist). We use these ingredients as aside from imparting their aroma, they also have benefits for the skin.
Artificial colours Synthetic colouring agents are used in soaps, shampoos, cleansers, moisturisers to make the product look more attractive and appealing. Coal tar artificial colours have been found to cause nausea, mood swings, headaches and fatigue. (K. Farrow, Skin Deep, 2002) The colour of Kosmea products is due to the natural ingredients used within the formula and no artificial colours are added.

PEG’s (polyethylene glycol) PEG’s are used in skin care products to help stop the product from separating.  Evidence suggests that PEG’s may be allergens. (K. Farrow, Skin Deep, 2002) We do not use PEG’s and rely on the combination of natural ingredients to maintain the stability of the product. We also use natural product thickeners such as xanthan gum and guar gum.
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) A surfactant found in most shampoos, toothpaste, shower gels and foaming facial cleansers to help create foam and bubbles. Used in industry to remove engine grease and clean the floor of garages.
Increases dryness and roughness and disturbs the growth process of new hair and skin. It has been known to exacerbate dry skin conditions such as eczema and dry skin. Lauryl glucoside, an ingredient derived from glucose and coconut and acts as a natural foaming agent, caprylyl/capryl glucoside a vegetable derived ingredient to cleanse hair and skin and sodium cocoyl hydrolysed wheat protein glutamate, a wheat protein that acts as a natural foaming agent.
Petrochemicals

Ingredients derived from fuels/petrol and are common in skin care products as they are very inexpensive. Examples of petrochemical ingredients include triethanolamine (TEA), diethanolamine (DEA), behentrimonium chloride and petrolatum.

TEA: Can pass easily through un-broken skin and long term exposure has been found to lead to heart, kidney and liver damage. (K. Farrow, Skin Deep, 2002)
DEA: Noted as a mild skin irritant and severe eye irritant. It is also moderately toxic by ingestion. (K.Farrow, Skin Deep, 2002)
As per above we use plant and vegetable derived surfactants.
We use essential oils instead of artificial fragrances.
We use vegetable oils and vegetable based glycerin instead of mineral oil.
Mineral oils Commonly found in lotions and moisturisers because they are inexpensive, feel good on the skin and initially very moisturising. A petroleum by-product can be commonly seen as: liquidum paraffinum, paraffin oil or paraffin wax.

This ingredient clogs the pores, interferes with the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins, promotes acne and other skin irritations and slows down the development of new, healthy cells resulting in premature ageing. It does little more than mask the condition of the skin underneath and little to promote healing of it.

As per above we use natural plant and nut based oils for their moisturising properties. Oils such as rose hip oil, jojoba, safflower, grapeseed, macadamia, avocado and sesame are used in Kosmea's products.

Animal derived ingredients Fats (triglycerides) used in skin care were often animal derived. These fats are used as emollients to give a waxy skin feel to products.    With so many great natural alternatives, we do not believe it is necessary to use any animal derived ingredient in our formulas.
In place of proteins, we use rice flour and natural plant and nut oils as emollients such as shea butter, jojoba and macadamia oil.

Q. Which products can I use in Kosmea’s range to remove make-up and waterproof eye make-up?
A.  Kosmea has two cleansing products in its product range; Clarifying Facial Wash and Purifying Cream Cleanser. Both of Kosmea’s cleansers remove make-up. We recommend our Purifying Cream Cleanser as being particularly effective in removing waterproof eye make-up as it contains avocado and sesame oils, both of which are renowned for their cleansing abilities and can quickly and easily dissolve make-up. Clarifying Facial Wash is an SLS free facial wash which gently removes make-up without over drying the skin, and is excellent if you prefer to use a facial wash. Both products can be used safely around the eye area, but if they come into direct contact with the eyes should be rinsed out immediately.

Q. I am used to using a toner, why isn’t there a toner in the Kosmea range?
A.
Toners are traditionally used to purify the skin and deep cleanse and tighten the pores. They are usually alcohol based and often have the effect of stripping the skin, starving it of its natural oils. This can cause unbalance in the skin - oily skin becomes oilier and dry skin becomes drier.

At Kosmea we do not believe it is necessary to do this to your skin which is why there is no toner in our range.  To refresh your skin during cleansing and to help set make-up, we recommend our Hydrating Rosewater Mist a soothing, cooling mist made from pure roseflower water, and contains no alcohol or harsh astringents.

Q. Is there a night cream in Kosmea’s range? If not, what would you recommend I use in the range instead of a night cream?
A. There is no night cream in the Kosmea range. At Kosmea we believe that applying thick creams and lotions at night does not allow the skin to breathe and can clog up the skin. We recommend using our Eighth Natural Wonder™ Revitalising Facial Serum and/or Skin Clinic™ Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil at nighttime. Organic rose hip oil is so close to the natural lipids in our skin that it allows the skin to breathe as it is absorbed. Overnight it works to repair and rebuild skin nourishing and moisturising it, so sleep really is beauty sleep!

Q. I have sensitive skin; can I use your range?
A. Kosmea’s natural skin care range has been developed using some of the finest flower and plant extracts. We do not use harmful synthetic ingredients, sodium lauryl sulphate, mineral oils or artificial fragrances that may dry or irritate skin prone to sensitivity. We also use the mildest and lowest form of preservatives in order to minimise sensitivity. We have made every effort to ensure that our product formulas are mild and gentle on the skin, whilst still being effective.

We recognise that there may still be an occasion when a product or an ingredient does not react well with a person’s skin. Even natural ingredients can still cause an adverse reaction and as everyone has different levels of sensitivity we would recommend patch-testing the product on your skin prior to purchase.

For nut allergy sufferers there is Australian macadamia oil in the Clarifying Facial Wash, Daily Facial Exfoliant and Everyday Balancing Conditioner. For customers with wheat allergies there is wheat protein in Clarifying Facial Wash and Everyday Balancing Conditioner.

Q. I am having trouble finding your Refining Rose Hip Scrub on the shelf. Have you discontinued it?
A. No, this product has not been discontinued and is now called Daily Facial Exfoliant. The formula remains the same and following from customer feedback, they found that the word ‘scrub’ in the product name implies that this product is too harsh to be used daily, therefore this new name reflects that it is gentle enough to be used everyday.

Q. Are your products safe to use whilst pregnant?
A. Yes, all of the products in Kosmea’s range are safe to use during pregnancy. Kosmea has developed a skin care range that is gentle enough for all skin types and is free from artificial fragrances and colours, mineral oils, sodium lauryl sulphate and petrochemicals and is suitable for use by mums-to-be.

There are some essential oils which should be avoided during pregnancy and lactation. At Kosmea we use rosewood, rose geranium and chamomile essential oils in our products for their soothing aromatherapeutic properties and delicate floral aroma’s and research has shown these oils are safe to use during pregnancy. We use these essential oils for their wonderful aroma and the fact that they have proven skin benefits. As the essential oils Kosmea source are so pure we only need to use them at a very low percentage, diluted in with a host of other vegetable oils – soybean, olive and jojoba.

We recommend our Skin Clinic™ Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil during and after pregnancy to help in the treatment of stretchmarks and dry skin. Kosmea’s Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil is a fruit oil not an essential oil and can be used on both mother and baby at anytime.  The vitamin A (topical trans retinoic acid) in our oil is naturally occurring, just as it is in the fruit and vegetables we eat everyday, and is safe to use whilst pregnant.

If you have any further concerns regarding products safe to use during pregnancy, we would always recommend that you contact a trained aromatherapist or your health care practitioner.

Q. I have rosacea, what products can I use in Kosmea’s range that will help this condition?
A.
Research has shown that in order to avoid ‘flare-ups’ associated with rosacea, it is best to do the following:

  • Steer clear of ingredients that sting, burn or cause facial redness. Some ingredients to avoid include alcohol, witch hazel, menthol, peppermint, eucalyptus oil or clove oil.
  • Select fragrance-free products. If you must choose a product that contains a fragrance, be sure that it appears at the end of the list of ingredients. The further down it appears, the less fragrance the product contains.

Kosmea’s Skin Clinic™ Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil will help soothe and nourish the dryness, itchiness and redness that comes with rosacea. Organic rose hip oil is naturally rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants and has been proven to help treat a variety of sensitive skin problems including eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. It will help nourish the skin and has the effect of balancing or harmonising the skin. Kosmea’s Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil does not contain any artificial fragrances and as it is a fruit oil and not an essential oil, it will not stimulate the skin causing it to ‘flare up’.

All of Kosmea’s products have been formulated to be gentle enough for all skin types, especially sensitive. We do not use any artificial fragrances, harmful synthetic ingredients or petrochemicals. We would recommend that if you suffer from rosacea or similar sensitive skin conditions, that you keep your skin care regime as simple as possible.

Our recommended regime is:

  • Cleanse skin with Kosmea’s Clarifying Facial Wash which is a gentle, facial wash.
  • Hydrate and soothe skin with Kosmea’s Hydrating Rosewater Mist which is a fine, facial spray made from pure roseflower petals.
  • Nourish and moisturise skin with Kosmea’s Skin Clinic™ Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil. Apply 2-3 drops after cleansing, morning and night onto slightly damp skin. Applying to wet skin helps the oil to absorb faster and better.
Q. Which products in Kosmea’s range can help with loss of skin elasticity, sagging and crepiness?
A.
Eighth Natural Wonder™ Revitalising Facial Serum is the new anti-ageing product in the Kosmea range. It contains a high content of rose hip oil as well as the unique hibiscus extract which is proven to relax facial muscles and smooth out wrinkles. This product instantly ‘lifts’ dull and tired skin and has the effect of ‘freezing’ fine lines and wrinkles giving skin instant youthfulness and vitality. Combined with organic rose hip oil, this duo form nature’s answer to cosmetic surgery.

At Kosmea, we would recommend either our Eighth Natural Wonder™ Revitalising Facial Serum or our Skin Clinic™ Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil as these products both help combat the signs of premature skin ageing, including loss of elasticity, dryness, fine lines and wrinkles and uneven skin tone. Rose hip oil is naturally very rich in vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids which help maintain skin elasticity and firmness and promote overall skin health.

Q. Which product/s can I use in Kosmea’s range for the treatment of acne and acne scarring?
A. Kosmea’s Skin Clinic™ Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil is a naturally rich source of essential fatty acids (EFA’s), vitamins and antioxidants and has been proven to help treat acne and acne scarring.

Organic rose hip oil is a natural source of topical trans-retinoic acid (a derivative of vitamin A). Unlike the synthetic form – commonly known as Retinol – the substance found in rose hip oil is part of its naturally occurring state and combined with the essential fatty acids, has been proven to help repair and rebuild sun-damaged, scarred and dehydrated skin. It is for this reason that rose hip oil makes a wonderful beauty treatment oil proven to help treat acne and acne scarring, very dry skin, wrinkles, fine lines, uneven skin tone and pigmentation. Rose hip oil also helps balance the skin so it is great if your skin is prone to oiliness. It is a superfine oil which is easily absorbed by the skin and leaves no oily residue.
Our recommended regime for acne prone skin or skin that has acne scarring, is as follows:

MORNING and NIGHT

  • Cleanse with Kosmea’s Purifying Cream Cleanser – a gentle skin-nourishing cleanser rich in organic rose hip oil, sesame oil and avocado oil or if you prefer a facial wash, cleanse with Clarifying Facial Wash – to rejuvenate, purify and nourish
  • Refresh with Kosmea’s Hydrating Rosewater Mist – a soothing and refreshing rosewater mist
  • Exfoliate with Kosmea’s Daily Facial Exfoliant – a gentle exfoliator containing chamomile flowers and crushed rose hips. You can exfoliate everyday if required, but twice weekly should be all that is needed. For a weekly, deep cleansing treat leave on skin for a few minutes then rinse. Rich kaolin clay will dig deep to draw out skin impurities and improve skin clarity. Use with The Five Minute Facial™ Muslin Cloth to give skin that deep-down clean.
  • Nourish and moisturise with Skin Clinic™ Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil – a naturally rich source of essential fatty acids (EFA’s), vitamins and antioxidants which has been proven to help treat acne and acne scarring. Apply 2-3 drops morning and night onto slightly damp skin. Applying to wet skin helps the oil to absorb faster and penetrate deeper.

Q. Which product can I use for my dry, itchy, flaky scalp?
A.
For the problem of a dry, flaky and itchy scalp we would recommend you try our Skin Clinic™ Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil which has been proven to help treat: dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, cradle cap and dry, sensitive skin to name just a few. Organic rose hip oil is a naturally rich source of essential fatty acids (EFA’s), vitamins and antioxidants and we recommend it for all skin types especially sensitive as it does not contain any harmful synthetic ingredients or artificial fragrances which may further irritate your condition. We recommend you apply the oil to your scalp at nighttime on the effected areas and rinse out thoroughly in the morning.

Q. I have dermatitis, eczema or psoriasis. What product in Kosmea’s range can I use to help this skin condition?
A. For dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis sufferers we always recommend our Skin Clinic™ Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil as the best treatment. Organic rose hip oil is a naturally rich source of essential fatty acids (EFA’s), vitamins and antioxidants and it has been proven to be beneficial in the treatment of chronic dry, itchy and flaky skin conditions.

A sufferer of dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis has skin that is low in essential fatty acids, which can exhibit enormous water loss. This can cause the skin to become tight, dry and scaly and can lead to cracking, itching and flaking. Rose hip oil is rich in the essential fatty acids needed by the skin to replenish lost moisture and soothe the discomfort of dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis. Also, it does not contain any of the harsh synthetic ingredients which are commonly used to treat skin conditions but which in many cases can exacerbate them! Our organic rose hip oil is free from artificial fragrances, mineral oils and petrochemicals and is super-critically extracted in order to retain all of its goodness.

We recommend that you apply 3-4 drops of rose hip oil twice daily onto damp skin as this helps the oil absorb deeper and quicker.

Q. Where are the expiry dates on the products in your range?
A.
It is not a requirement for our products to have an expiry date (apart from our Moisturising Lotion SPF 30+ as this product is a sunscreen) on them but we do have the PAO logo (Period After Opening logo) which advises that we recommend that the product is used within 6 months after opening – as opposed to 6 months after purchase. This logo can be viewed on the right of all our cartons (and on the actual products) and has the number '6' with a can symbol next to it.

Q. Does Kosmea test their products on animals?

A.
At Kosmea, none of our products are tested on animals, nor do we source ingredients that have been tested on animals. In Australia, Kosmea is accredited by Choose Cruelty Free, an organisation which aims to stop the testing of products on animals. Our natural skin care range is also free from animal derived ingredients and is suitable for vegans.

Q. My Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil smells/looks different to the last one that I purchased, is there something wrong with it?
A.
At Kosmea we take great pride in sourcing the finest rose hip oil in the world. Our rose hip oil comes from a certified organic source where no fertilisers or pesticides are used. To ensure we give our customers a rose hip oil rich in its natural vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids, we have chosen to have minimal intervention in its production.  Therefore we do not bleach, colour, or deodorise our oil to make it more commercially attractive. As we choose not to intervene with nature it does mean that as a result of seasonal climate and crop changes our organic rose hip oil may vary slightly in colour, aroma and texture.  We guarantee you that the quality and performance of the product is unaffected and you are guaranteed a product, just as nature intended.

Q. What can I use on my baby to keep his/her skin hydrated?
A. Skin Clinic™ Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil can be used on newborn babies to keep their skin nourished and healthy. Massaged into baby’s damp skin it is easily absorbed and non-greasy. As a natural source of essential fatty acids and vitamins it moisturises and replenishes the skin, helping to protect it from dryness and itchiness. It can also be used to help treat cradle cap and nappy rash as well as childhood eczema.

Q. Your rose hip oil contains vitamin A, can I still use it during pregnancy?
A. We recommend our Skin Clinic™ Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil during and after pregnancy to help in the treatment of stretchmarks and skin affected by pregnancy hormones. Kosmea’s Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil is a fruit oil not an essential oil and can be used on both mother and baby at anytime.  The vitamin A in our oil is naturally occurring, just as it is in the fruit and vegetables we eat everyday, and is safe to use whilst pregnant.

Q. Can I still use your Organic Rose Hip Oil, now that I use the Eighth Natural Wonder™?
A. Yes you can! At Kosmea we have developed a skin care range that has no hard and fast rules. Our promise is to make skin care as natural and uncomplicated as possible. If you are a current user of Kosmea’s Skin Clinic™ Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil and you are happy with the results you are getting then we recommend you continue to use it. If you want to use both products we recommend first applying the oil to damp skin and allowing it to absorb and then applying our Eighth Natural Wonder™ Revitalising Facial Serum for the added anti-ageing and firming benefits of hibiscus extract.

Q. Can I add your Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil to water as a slight flavouring for my baby?
A. Kosmea’s Skin Clinic™ Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil is recommended for topical use only. Although it is safe when ingested it is not soluble in water and if you are looking for the benefits of ingesting rose hip, we recommend you try rose hip syrup (which can be diluted in water) or rose hip tea bags renowned for helping settle upset tummies
