The FDA is reminding doctors, pharmacists and asthma patients that inhalers using chloroflurocarbons, or CFC’s, as propellants will no longer be sold in the U.S. after December 31st. Devices with a different propellant, hydrofluroalkanem, or HFA are replacing the alburterol inhalers. The change is part of an international agreement to limit usage of CFC, which depletes the earth’s ozone layer. Alburterol inhalers are among the most widely used machines, with 52 million prescriptions a year.
