Monsanto seeks OK for corn seed

June 29, 2008

The seed giant said its new corn seed, called SmartStax, which is more resistant to pests and weeds, should be commercially available in the U.S. by 2010. Monsanto (MON) submitted documents and research data on SmartStax, which was developed through 8 genetic modifications, to the EPS for approval. The company said SmartStax, designed to control corn pests above and below ground, could boost corn yields 4%-10%. Corn prices have surged amid rising demand for livestock feed and biofuel. Monsanto slid 1% to 135.92.
