Senate Approves Conflict Disclosure For FDA Advisers. The Senate unanimously passed an amendment to force the Food and Drug Administration to publicly disclose the conflicts of interest of members of the agency’s advisory committees.
The amendment was attached to the must-pass agriculture appropriations bill. Under the provision, the agency would be required to disclose any conflicts that required waivers 15 days before a panel meeting. Currently, that information is available only through a Freedom Information Act request, which can take months to process.
The Senate Provision was introduced by Sen. Richard Durbin (D., Ill.) and supported by Sen. Michael Enzi of Wyoming, the Republican chairman of the committee that oversees the FDA. FDA advisory committees make recommendations about whether the agency should approve drugs, as well as other questions. The Senate provision would also make the FDA tell the Health and Human Services Department’s inspector general about efforts to find committee members with no conflicts.
