U.S. cholesterol levels dropping. The average total cholesterol levels for men and women aged 20-74 dropped 8.6% to 203 milligrams per deciliter of blood, mostly due to declines in older adults, the Journal of American Medical Association reported. However, the percentage of people taking cholesterol-reducing drugs nearly tripled from 3.4% to 9.3%, mostly because of higher medication rates in older adults.
