Almost all women experience some level o emotional distress when diagnosed with breast cancer, and 47% met the clinical criteria for emotional distress or a psychiatric disorder. Dartmouth University’s study of 236 women newly diagnosed with breast cancer said the source of their distress was related to cancer diagnosis, followed by uncertainty of treatment.; 21 percent of the women met criteria for psychiatric disorders, including major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
