A chemical found in shrimp shells is being integrated into a new insulin pill being developed at the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan. Researchers found that the nanoparticle shell that covers shrimp can protect the insulin drug from being destroyed by stomach acid. Currently, drugs containing protein chemicals, including insulin, cannot survive in stomach acid if swallowed, and the only alternative to injections is a nasal spray. The shell would resist stomach acid, yet can release insulin into the bloodstream, BBC News reported.
