Microbes can be used to help recover methane in a far more environmentally friendly fashion, according to British researchers. The bacteria can help recover methane from deep oil reserves without using energy-intensive and thermal-polluting processes. The method may also help extract the oil that is often left in fields because the process becomes too unwieldy or expensive, potentially doubling the output from some oil reservoirs. The microbe method will be field tested in 2009.
