Why are there seasons for fruits and vegetables?
In the days before supermarkets, people had to wait until certain seasons to harvest foods that would grow at those times of the year. In the spring and summer, they could pick asparagus, berries, melons, peaches, tomatoes and corn. In the fall, foods that grew underground – like carrots, turnips, potatoes, and onions – were stored in root cellars to be eaten during cold months. Today, you can get most vegetables all year round at the supermarket. Even so, colder weather makes us hungrier for heavier, starchy vegetables. In the spring we start eating more cool salads with leafy greens, tomatoes, peppers, and other summer veggies. No matter what the season is, just remember to eat all the colorful vegetables and fruits you can everyday!
