HEART DISEASE
HOW IT AFFECTS OUR CHILDREN Overweight and obesity are increasing at a staggering pace in our children across all ethnic groups. Some are worse affected than others. We must not be led by misleading and persuasive food commercials. We are all responsible for our children’s health.
For example, if you did not vaccinate your children, they would not be allowed in school. As ridiculous as that is, you may well eventually end up in court or your child put into foster care. You would be in violation of the law. If your 5 or 8 year old child were found wandering the streets at 1 a.m. you would be arrested. If your child is overeating and eating all the wrong foods and is obese, nothing happens to the parent or guardian. I am not suggesting a law be passed for proper nutrition. But you get my point. We must be responsible. We adults must set the example.
OBESITY AND OVERWEIGHT It is estimated that 10,000,000 children ages 6-19 are considered overweight or obese. It is estimated that over 10% of preschool children between the ages of 2 and 5 are overweight.
Since 1990 the prevalence of those who are obese increased by 75%. This increase reached across every ethnic group.
The cost related to obesity and overweight among children is a stunning and shocking $127 MILLION DOLLARS.
INACTIVITY IN CHILDREN A little more than half of high school students are enrolled in physical education classes from grades 9-12. At age seventeen, more than half of female students report no physical activity. Hispanics and Blacks carry the largest segment of the population who have little or no physical or leisure activity.
The cost related to inactivity is over $75 BILLION DOLLARS annually. What makes this ever more stunning and shocking, is our youth are being ravaged by inactivity and bad diet.
Keep them away from fast food; it should be a matter of common sense by now. Hamburgers, french fries, Chinese food, Mexican food, and pizza represent over 15% of our daily total saturated fat intake. Most of it is consumed in one sitting. This leaves no room for the fat that will be consumed at other meals. Total fat should not be over 30% of total caloric intake with no more than 10% to be saturated fat,-10% is generous. It shouldn’t be there, or it should be lowered to no more than 5% of total saturated fat. I will admit this requires a major shift in eating habits for many. If your children’s life is worth anything, you will make the attempt. It is in our nature to do the right thing. Let’s do it. NOW!
