Monsanto’s Genetically Modified Products Vs Organically Grown Five years ago, shareholders of Monsanto were wondering if the company would survive. Serving to maintain a profitable company and continue to maintain its chemical producing behemoth. One can say, their chemicals are probably found in many of the products we use in our daily lives. Unfortunately, we also consume many of their products unintentionally. Their products range from Nutro-sweet to Astro turf and Agent Orange. The 1980’s brought biotech to the forefront when Monsanto scientists began splicing plant genes. By the mid 1990’s Monsanto commercialized these products. As of 2005 the soybean is the most widely genetically modified seed on earth as well as being consumed by hundreds of millions of people, ninety percent do so unknowingly. Monsanto genetically modified the soybean to be pesticide resistant. The pesticide, Roundup, was then and is today the most widely used pesticide. The genetically modified soybean is resistant to Roundup and has no impact on the crop which was a financial bonanza for Monsanto. However, it is sure to wreak havoc on our internal organs. Scientific genius if you will. The public outcry began and lawsuits were filed. Monsanto lost 6 billion dollars in the year 2000. The year ending 2005 will leave Monsanto with a $550,000,000.00 profit. Genetically modified crops will grow to over 250 million acres worldwide. The lawsuits, obviously didn’t make a dent. These two crops find their way onto our kitchen tables via every processed food and just about every soft drink. For example, high fructose corn syrup, found on the ingredients list of just about every processed food and drink product, is made from Monsanto’s G.M. corn seed Once a G.M. crop seed is approved the FDA considers it a conventional plant. Therefore no food labeling is required. However, in a recent Rutgers “Food Policy Institute Survey,” people who were told of the G.M. foods in our food supply 90% said they would want their food labeled as containing the G.M. plant. Almost 80% said if they knew what foods contained the G.M. seed they would not buy that food. The debate of G.M. food safety will continue. The long term effects of daily G.M. food intake are unknown. Latin America is fast becoming a biotech agricultural crop producer. For example, Brazil will plant over 112 million acres of G.M. foods. These foods will definitely find their way to your child’s lunchbox. One more great reason to buy organic.
