Getting the Best Results with Acupuncture

Many people do not know that acupuncture care can be enhanced by either doing certain activities or avoiding specific ones. Here is what you can do for best results during acupuncture care.

Before treatment: Schedule your activities so that you do not come into treatment with a full stomach or after eating upsetting foods, just after sexual activity, when rushed, or extremely tired.

After treatment: Take it easy and assimilate the effect of the treatment for a few hours, if possible. At the least do your best not to be “very busy” and/or strenuously exerting. Wait at least an hour to eat a full meal.

While undergoing acupuncture care, you will benefit most by refraining or reducing the use of caffeine, cigarettes, alcohol and other drugs. Acupuncture can also assist you with this. Let’s communicate about it.

If you are taking any prescribed medication or change your medication at any point during treatment, let me know immediately.

Self-help: Your body will heal itself at its own rate. Please do not try to help things with self-administered remedies unless prescribed. Instead of helping, they may be harmful. You will be helping yourself by getting enough sleep, proper nutrition, and recreational exercise, as well as avoiding, if you can, stressful situations. You will serve yourself best by setting aside some time each day for complete mental and physical relaxation.

Home Care: As I begin assisting you with your condition, follow the home instructions, which I will give you. These may include such therapies as hot or cold applications; prescribed exercises, diet, herbs, or supplements; or self-massage for specific points of your body. Make mental notes when you feel better and tell me. If you have an “off day,” I want to know that too.

Questions With Answers: The best results occur when you can relax with the healing cycle. Answering your questions may aid in this. For example, as the energy shifts in your body in response to acupuncture treatment, you may have different sensations, from euphoria to what is called healing crisis. You may want to know if what you are experiencing is appropriate for you at the time.

Communicate! I urge you to call or write down any questions about your health or treatment. I want you to feel assured that your questions are satisfactorily answered and your needs get met. If you have an emergency, do not hesitate to call my emergency number.

Follow-Through: A healing cycle has been initiated. It is important that you be consistent with keeping your appointments, because this will aid your healing timetable, resulting in the most successful results. If you ever find it necessary to change or cancel your appointment, please try to give as much advance as possible, at least 24 hours.

Faith: Although acupuncture is not dependent on faith in it to work, your attitude is so important for your sense of well-being! So spread you faith in acupuncture. This is good medicine for you and for others. Your encouragement and sharing your improvement may be what is needed for others too.

Teamwork: Your health and well-being are very important to me. I will do my best to assist you, and you can help yourself best by following through the recommendations that I give you. This is how results are accomplished. It’s teamwork!
