Coping With Anxiety
Stress usually occurs as a result of a particular situation. Anxiety, however, is a general feeling of worry or fear that isn’t related to any special event. For example, you might worry about a child who is perfectly healthy, or that you are under a constant threat of danger. Symptoms of anxiety include muscle tension, shortness of breath, dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, trembling and a fast heartbeat. Anxiety may be related to a side effect of medicine, to an illness, to an unconscious memory of something fearful in perhaps to a chemical imbalance to your body. Learning to cope with anxiety can certainly help you lead a calmer and healthier life.
q Pick the same time everyday to do your worrying. Spend 30 minutes trying to dwell on what “might” happen. Focus on what’s really happening. Then let go of your worry.
q Picture yourself confronting the things that have made you anxious in the past. This will help you begin to face them.
q Get enough sleep.
q Exercise regularly.
q Take a deep breath. Hold it foe 5 seconds and exhale it slowly.
q Try stretching to relieve tension. Slowly roll your head in a circle. Reach towards the ceiling and then slowly bend side to side. Roll your soldiers.
q Try muscle relaxation. Choose a muscle, hold it tightly for a few seconds, and then relax.
q If you feel yourself getting anxious, count backwards from 100 to 0.
q Avoid alcohol and caffeine.
q Talk to a health care professional (your social worker or psychologist) to better understand the source of your anxiety and how to get it under control.
q Ask your doctor about medication to reduce your anxiety while you are learning ways to cope.
Most importantly, take action to help you gain sense of control over your anxiety.
