Bird Flu Poultry Vaccinations
Bird Flu H5S1 strain has had much attention in the world news media. Most news has dealt with human infection once the H5N1 mutates to the human form and pandemic occurs. The focus here is on the vaccination of poultry such as chickens, duck, turkey, pheasant and the like to prevent the spread of the H5N1 virus amongst the world’s poultry and it’s effect on organic labeling. Millions of birds of all types have been slaughtered throughout Asia in what appears to be a futile attempt to contain the virus from spreading throughout the world. The French and Dutch have began a frantic vaccination program of all their poultry. This attempt to protect this multi-billion dollar industry opens up many questions. To begin, France is Europe’s largest exporter of poultry. Japan alone imports over 1500 tons of chicken and over 400 tons of internal organs, not very appetizing. What now happens to the label Free Range, No Antibiotic and Growth Hormone free. I personally am not big on poultry, but when I do eat chicken, I buy what I believe to be, is an organic chicken free of manmade chemicals. Will there be a new label that states, bird flu free. By what means? Has this bird been vaccinated? Or, just tested for the H5N1 virus. Poultry is big business, hundreds of billions of dollars worth of business. We have penned some not so appetizing articles about chicken that are posted on this web site. A little knowledge can go a long way. The intention here is the same. Though mad cow disease is a very real danger and yes, wild salmon from Alaska has trace amounts of mercury. I tend to lean toward a lean filet mignon if I were a carnivore or tasty Sockeye salmon that is actually good for your arteries, skin and hair. The poultry industry does not want a frightened public to stop consuming chicken. We cannot depend on the USDA to protect us either. Until the facts are known, we believe a little personal due diligence is required to protect your family. Remember the old adage, a bird in the hand is better than 3 in the bush. Excuse the pun. Cooked Poultry Doesn’t Transmit Bird-Flu Infection
GENEVA – The World Health Organization said cooked poultry doesn’t transmit bird flu, issuing a statement in a bid to calm consumer fears as the virus spreads. “The WHO confirms that when poultry products are safely handled and properly cooked, humans are not at risk of acquiring H5N1 [bird flu] infection through food,” The United Nations agency said yesterday. European countries where the virus has been detected have reported big declines in consumption of chicken and other poultry products, and France, Europe’s largest producer, is facing curbs to its exports. Some twenty countries-including Morocco, Egypt, Thailand and South Korea, representing 5% of French foreign poultry sales-imposed restrictions after the deadly disease was found in a turkey farm in the eastern part of the country. “Globally, the evidence demonstrates that there is no risk of infection when birds and eggs are well cooked, as this kills the virus,” the WHO said, adding that poultry products are important sources of protein. It noted that since December 2003, when the virus reappeared, 173 people have been infected and 93 of those people have died. But none of those cases has been linked to the consuming of properly cooked poultry.
Well folks, if chicken is your only source of protein, then I recommend taking a peak at our recipe section. We provide excellent sources of non-saturated fat protein in the consumption of beans. Lentils are a superb source of protein. Please exercise great care when feeding your family or yourself.
