Drug Resistant Infections
Drug resistant staphylococcus aureus has been on a rise for the past decade. These skin infections sometimes eat away at portions of the body causing hospital stays of up to three months. The infection can also cause bone infection causing amputation. It is estimated that nearly 3 million people carry staph in their nostrils. The scaling and scabbing is often misdiagnosed as a side effect of allergies or colds. Over 130,000 hospitalizations are involved with staphylococcus aureus. The February issue of clinical infectious diseases and the Infectious Diseases Society of America are calling for Congress to aid in challenging the pharmaceutical industry to pursue new antibiotics treatments. Why ask Congress? The pharmaceutical industry does not see the big bucks in new antibiotic research. It takes years and close to $800 million to get FDA approval. Representative, Barbara Cubin (R., Wyo) has introduced bill H.R. 3154, which will offer tax breaks, clinical trial grants, fast track approval and patens extensions. A vote is not certain, but it is a step in the right direction. The Medical Industries abuse of antibiotic prescription use from toddler to adolescents has created an antibiotic resistant generation. Our meat and dairy industries has for over forty years loaded their animals with antibiotics, which further exacerbated the problem. We strongly urge parents of toddlers and older to always buy organic whenever possible. Avoiding non-organic and processed foods will only enhance the bodies’ natural defensive system. When and if the need arises for antibiotic use, the body may be more responsive to the treatment thereby decreasing the treatment duration and frequency.
