How Essential Oils are Used in Aromatherapy
Baths
For a twenty – minute soak to relieve tension and stress, run the bath to a comfortable temperature. Sprinkle for drops maximum of one essential oil or three drops each of two essential oils as a combination onto the surface of the water. Agitate the water gently to disperse the oils from getting in. If you have dry or sensitive skin, you can dilute the essential oils in four teaspoons (20 ml) whole milk or unfragranced bath oil before adding to the water. A relaxing combination is three drops each of lavender and sandalwood.
Inhalation
This method helps you relieve colds, influenza, or sinus problems. You need a large bowl just over half full or nearly boiling water. Sprinkle two drops each of eucalyptus and tea tree onto the surface, than cover your head with a towel and inhale the aromatic steam for fifteen to twenty minutes. Remove your glasses or contact lenses so they don’t steam up or irritate the eyes.
Vaporization
Vaporizers gently heat up to evaporate the essential oil and disperse its fragrance into a room. You can buy a ceramic burner with tea light candles or one of the many electric models available. You should follow the manufacture’s guidelines when using the oils though; generally four drops of one oil or three drops each of two as a combination will scent a room for up to two hours. You can use tea tree and lemon essential oils to remove unpleasant odors, or choose a favorite aroma to create an environment that suits your mood.
Massage
When using essential oils for massage, they first need to be diluted in a carrier oil. These are vegetable oils such as grapeseed, sweet almond, or jojoba. Most of the massage in this book blends are based on a formula using ten drops of essential oils in four teaspoons (20 ml) carrier oil. The mixture should be stored in a clean glass bottle. Shake the mixture before use. This is a suitable delusion for massage on most skins and is enough to massage a full body, not including the face. Sensitive, very young, or elderly skin requires only five drops in four teaspoons (20 ml). (See pages 120 –121 for Special Massage Blends.) Your blends will last for a maximum of four weeks. If you want to make larger quantities, simply take eight teaspoons (40 ml) of base oil and double the drops of essential oils in the blend formula.
