FDA is reminding consumers that contact with baby turtles can pose a serious health risk to infants, small children, and adults with impaired immune systems:
The outer skin and shell surface of the turtles can harbor Salmonella bacteria, which can cause severe illness or death. A four-week-old infant in Florida recently died of infection traced to Salmonella also found on a pet turtle.
