Nuclear Power Sets Off a Dispute in the Senate
WASHINGTON – A bid to include new nuclear power plants in a federal mandate to increase use of “renewable” energy by electric utilities fell short in the Senate, raising the ire of supporters and Republicans leaders, and threatening the “Green” energy initiative. The dispute surrounded a Democrat-led amendment to require U.S. utilities to produce 15% of their electricity by 2020 from wind, solar, geothermal and other sources of renewable energy recognized by environmental groups. Sen. Pete Domenici (R., N.M.) called the proposal, offered by Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D., N.M.), “distorted” because it ruled out new nuclear plants, hydroelectric dams and others sources of clean energy that might otherwise be used by Southern states. He offered language to expand the definition to include the nuclear power, but it failed on a 56-39 vote, failing to get 60 votes needed under the ruled of debate.
