GE issued the first credit card that allows users to voluntarily reduce emissions linked to global climate change. The corporate conglomerate will give users the option of contributing up to 1% of their card purchases to buy greenhouse emissions offsets. Credits represent emissions reductions that took place somewhere else, like a solar-power farm, which produces energy without emitting greenhouse gases. GE said it hopes the Earth Rewards credit card will generate 10 million tons of greenhouse gas credits by 2010.
