Call it part of the wages of rapid industrialization. Chinese state media reported last week that the rate of birth defects in newborns is soaring in the coal mining areas of Shanxi province in northern China. Shanxi is a heavily polluted region, reflecting both the mining and the burning of high sulfur coal. The report comes as environmental movements are also spreading, with some clashing with local authorities. There were no figures offered for Shanxi, but national estimates indicate that birth defects have jumped by nearly 40 percent since 2001 – up to 1.2 million of the 20 million babies born in China each year. In the United States, 1 in 33 babies suffers from a birth defect.
