Doing Your Part to Go Green at Home

February 10, 2008

Doing Your Part to Go Green at Home

Robin Wilson, founder of Robin Wilson Home, is a design, home and lifestyle expert who specializes in eco-friendly design.  Her “green” philosophy is about lifestyle choices, much like you would make of you were watching your diet.  She says though it is impossible to go 100 percent, there is a lot you can do to create an eco-friendly environment.  For instance, “bamboo, which is actually harder than red oak, is a great material for flooring, cabinetry and countertops.  It’s grass so it grows back.”

You should also look for “low VOC” products.  “Volatile organic compounds emit vapors, evaporate easily ad contain carbon, [all] commonly found in paints and similar solvents, high concentration cleaning chemicals, room air fresheners and carpets with latex backing.”  She recommends low VOC carpet tiles made from old carpeting.  “They’re terrific.  Even better, they’re great for kids who play on the floor; they’re easily washable. And you can take them with you when you move.”

Wilson also likes low VOC paints, like Benjamin Moore’s Aura.  “It primes itself so even though low VOC brands may seem more costly, it’s really not, because you only need one coat.”

What else can you do?  “Organic mattresses and box springs are another good bet,” Wilson says.  “Of course, LED [light emitting diode] light bulbs are a must in any home.  For terraces and gardens, try to use low-maintenance plants that only require twice weekly watering.  I also love using soy candles because soy wax is al natural; it’s not made from petroleum and when burning, they produce 90 percent less soot than paraffin candles and don’t increase CO2 levels.”
